Mike Gordon will kick off a U.S. headline tour at Charleston Music Hall in Charleston, SC on June 5, 2015. The bassist/vocalist will be bringing along his band – Scott Murawski (guitar), Craig Myers (percussion), Robert Walter (keyboards) and John Kimock (drums) – plus plenty of mad scientist gadgetry designed to make the shows a highly interactive experience.
The month-long outing will include stops in St. Louis, Chicago, Philadelphia, Albany, Buffalo, New Haven and more. The band will make its debut performances at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, Paper Mill Island in Syracuse, and the Academy of Music in Northampton. Gordon will also perform as part of the Lowell Summer Music Series, which takes place just outside his hometown of Boston.
Always eager to blur the boundary between the band and the audience, Gordon and his design team spent two years devising a myriad of audio and visual tricks to do just that. The EEL – one of their key inventions – is an enormous digital keyboard that spans the edge of the stage and allows fans to play the band.
“The fans instinctively touch the lit keys, and when they do, they hear a sound come through the venue’s sound system. A bass note, the blat of a snare drum, the plink of a piano,” said Wired Magazine, which came out to a show on Mike’s 2014 tour, which featured some of the elements that will be a part of this June run.”They start to tap the various keys, and the sounds spill out in rhythm with the song being played on stage. In a matter of seconds, a passive observer becomes part of the show.”
Extensive use of moiré brings a 3-D quality to the staging. Lighting director Jason Liggett will orchestrate the tour’s many effects, which include glowing, custom-designed instruments played by Gordon and guitarist Scott Murawski.
